At one time in my hometown, Bury St. Edmunds, the Abbey Gate opened onto the Great Courtyard of the Abbey. It was the secular entrance used by the Abbey's servants. In 1327, it was destroyed by the local people who were angry at the power of the monastery and it had to be rebuilt.Today, the Abbey Gate leads into beautiful gardens that change with the seasons.
